Shillong, Sep 30: Lawyers in Meghalaya will abstain from all judicial work from October 1 till the state government removes Amit Kumar as Advocate General.
The Joint Executive Committee of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and Shillong Bar Association took the unanimous decision at an emergent meeting Wednesday, in pursuance of the August 24 resolution of all bar associations to pursue Kumar’s removal.
The Bar said despite assurances from the Deputy Chief Minister on September 2 and the Chief Minister on September 16 that Kumar would not represent the state pending consideration of its demands, he has continued to appear before the High Court and District Court.
On September 30, he appeared for the government before the Commercial Court in Shillong, which the committee called total defiance of the CM’s assurance and an open insult to the legal fraternity.
The abstention will not apply to bail and urgent matters. The Bar will also hold a mass rally in Shillong on October 5.
