As incessant rains pounded the State, Mawsynram, which gauged an enormous 1003.6 mm of precipitation till yesterday, also sees the loss of nine lives.
Mawsynram MLA, Himalaya Shangpliang has expressed grief over the loss of lives from his constituency and was appreciative of the government’s response to the incidents. He said officials have been working round the clock to clear the roads, landslide areas and lots of JCBs excavators have been pressed in for the service.
A massive landslide at Dangar took the lives of a mother and her four children and one each in Kenmynsaw, Boro Ryngku and Betgora A village, all under Mawsynram block.
Shangpliang said this year’s monsoon has been unprecedented. He said besides normal landslides that occur every year the constituency has never experienced the loss of lives like this time which is very unfortunate.
Mawsynram is at present the wettest place in India, with an average annual rainfall of 11802.4 mm (average of the 1974-2022).
The MLA further informed that till today evening most of the road has been cleared and efforts to clear the road from Mawsynram to Hatmawdon is on.
“The relief materials have reached the people today through the BDO and I was there monitoring that. The ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh is yet to reach the aggrieved parties and I have already spoken to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and they are preparing the paper works and it will be done,” he told Highland Post.
