Mawmluh Cave in Sohra will soon be developed into a major tourist site of the State at an estimated cost of Rs 30.16 crore.
The State government through the Tourism Department has recently invited bids from reputed firms for ‘Development, Operations, Maintenance and Management of Mawmluh Cave Experience’ under Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.
The last date to receive the bids is October 18. The date for opening of the technical bids is October 21.
Mawmluh Cave holds great geological significance and serves as evidence of the Meghalayan age. The cave is located in a limestone-rich area, which has led to the formation of extensive cave systems.
Notably, Mawmluh Cave has received recognition from the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and has earned a place on the list of 100 geological heritage sites worldwide. It is the only identified IUGS site in India.
With a length of 7.2 kms, Mawmluh Cave is the fourth longest cave in the Indian subcontinent. The cave is a long maze with many openings and is decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, drapes and moon milk.
Set at an altitude of 4,503 m, the cave is known for its stalagmite formations. Another prime feature of the cave is the pool inside the cave that is formed from five different rivers that pass through the cave.
Mawmluh Cave has been identified for developing tourism infrastructure and amenities nearby. It is located 1.6 km far from the cave, currently this vacant land is not directly connected to the cave and the existing trail leading to the land parcel is a pathway. The land parcel has a rolling terrain with some existing trails.
The Tourism Department and the Dorbar Shnong of Mawmluh have signed an agreement for the use of the land by the department for developing tourism infrastructure and amenities.
