The Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority will conduct a State Level Mock Exercise on Thursday from 9am onwards in all 12 districts of Meghalaya simultaneously.
The mock exercise will be a simulation of the 1897 earthquake and will witness the participation of district officials, armed forces, paramilitary forces, police, fire and emergency service, hospitals, schools, colleges, NGOs, community members, Bharat Scouts and Guides, Indian Red Cross Society, and various others.
Members of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will attend to oversee the conduct of the mock exercise.
The drill will see numerous rescue parties, ambulances and other responders participating and the State Disaster Management Authority has advised the general public not to panic and cooperate with the arrangements made by the government and plan their travel accordingly to avoid delays in traffic.
In Shillong, to start the drill, a siren will be given by the Deputy Controller, which will be an indication that an earthquake has occurred. The identified locations for the mock exercise are Polo and the road from Polo towards Wahingdoh, Polo Super Market, shops in around the Polo area, Hotel Polo Towers, SBI building and MeECL Lumjingshai, Samkhamti Petrol Pump at Urkaliar, Ganesh Das Government Hospital in Lawmali, St Xavier’s School in Polo, Pynthorumkhrah Golflink Secondary School and Shillong Secondary School in Forest Colony.
The incident command post, medical camp, staging area, relief camp and base camp will be set up in the SRGT parking lot and open space in front of Third Ground in Polo.
