The Meghalaya unit of the Awaken India Movement (AIM) has written to the Prime Minister over the situation in Manipur, specifically concerning the refugees fleeing that state by taking refuge in Shillong.
The AIM said that while it sympathises with the refugees, it is important that Meghalaya’s native tribes do not become minorities in their own homeland.
The organisation referred to refugees who have been seeking certificates from headmen, which the AIM claimed is to make them citizens of Meghalaya. Such certificates are necessary for daily life, such as even to get children into school so that they do not miss out on education despite being away from home, although the AIM does not refer to these situations.
