West Bengal Chief Minister and chairperson of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Mamata Banerjee, will attend a public meeting in North Garo Hills on Wednesday as part of the party’s campaign for the upcoming state election.
This will be Banerjee’s second visit to Meghalaya, after making a two-day stop in Shillong in December. It was during that visit that the TMC launched its WE Card for women’s empowerment. It later announced the MYE scheme for unemployed youth. Beneficiaries of the two schemes will each receive Rs 1,000 per month if the TMC comes to power, the party has promised. More than 3 lakh women have signed up for the WE Card, while several thousand youths have registered for MYE.
Banerjee will be accompanied by her nephew and TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee MP. Also in attendance will be another TMC MP, Derek O’Brien, TMC member in charge of Meghalaya, Manas R Bhunia, Meghalaya TMC president Charles Pyngrope and leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma.
The public meeting will be held at the Dilma Apal Playground, Mendipathar.
