Shillong, May 24: Power supply to Tura and adjoining areas was disrupted after heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday night brought down a large tree on the 33 KV Tura-I power line at Ringre, officials said.
The tree fell within the premises of Tura Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, damaging the line and forcing an immediate shutdown for safety.
Power utility personnel, assisted by disaster rescue teams, began clearance operations late on Saturday and continued beyond midnight. West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal closely monitored the restoration work.
Incessant rain through the night and into Sunday morning also uprooted trees in several other localities across the district, damaging houses and snapping electric lines.
The main 33 KV line to Hawakhana Substation was also hit, adding to outages in Tura and other parts of the district. No casualties have been reported so far.
