Shillong, May 24: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) extended its congratulations to the state government on the historic recognition of Khasi as an official state language and for its recent adoption under the CBSE curriculum.
This achievement, which also brought the Garo language under the CBSE, marks a significant milestone in the preservation, promotion and strengthening of our indigenous language, culture and identity, the pressure group said today.
However, while this development is a welcome and long-awaited step, the HYC strongly opined that it should not be regarded as the final destination as the “next and more important step” must be to secure the inclusion of Khasi under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. “Such constitutional recognition would provide greater protection and status to the language and create wider opportunities in education, administration, literature, research and national competitive examinations,” it said.
