Shillong, Apr 15: The meeting between the Tourism department and members of the Green Tech Foundation (GTF) who are on an indefinite hunger strike over the Lumpongdeng Island issue failed.
“The outcome of the meeting was very disappointing. We have been sitting here for more than six-days hoping for a productive result from the government’s end that they will scrap this project,” GTF general secretary Ritre Lyngdoh told reporters.
Lyngdoh said that during the meeting with Tourism Director Brenda Lee Pakyntein, there were deliberations on various issues with the environment being the crux of the discussion.
He said that the department is adamant that they will not revoke the agreement that mentions Lumpongdeng to be part of the luxury resort and spa.
Lyngdoh said that due to the disappointing outcome of the meeting GTF announced that the indefinite hunger strike will go on and demonstrations as guaranteed under the constitution of India will be amplified.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, the authorities had invited the members of the Green Tech Foundation for talks but the latter wanted the invitation on paper and also wanted the FIR against the members to be revoked.
The Tourism Department later sent the invitation in writing and the discussions were held at the Directorate of Tourism, Lower Lachaumiere.
Meanwhile, the health condition of chairman of the Green Tech Foundation H Bansiewdor Nonglang, who has been on a hunger strike since April 9, has deteriorated.
