The timeless adage “Love is Blind” manifested into reality as a couple, both visually impaired, celebrated their wedding ceremony, uniting in love to form a new family.
In a heart-warming event in Ri Bhoi district, a courageous young man, despite being visually impaired, made the bold choice to marry a woman with low vision from Assam.
Their beautiful wedding ceremony took place on February 9 at Nongpoh Parish, where Fr. James Mani in the present of Nongpoh Parish Priest, Fr. Peter Syiemlieh and nuns officiated the wedding with a holy mass, sanctifying their union.
The couple, Gabriel Nongrum from Umskun village in Ri Bhoi District, and Namika Haloi from Assam, both faced unique challenges due to their visual impairments. Yet, with unwavering determination and mutual consent, they embraced the challenge of building a life together, defying societal norms and expectations.
Adding to the unique story of love between Gabriel Nongrum and Namika Haloi, it’s worth noting that Gabriel works as an Accessibility Tester in the IT sector at Barrier Break Company, Mumbai. Meanwhile, his beloved, Namika, serves as a Customer Care Executive at Vindhya of E Info Media Private Limited, Bangalore.
Their initial encounter carries an intriguing twist. Gabriel, known as a footballer, was admired by Namika, who was initially his fan. This unexpected connection since 2019 led to the blossoming of their relationship, showcasing that love knows no bounds, even in the most unexpected circumstances.
Speaking to media persons after their wedding ceremony, the couple expressed their gratitude to God for blessing their union. Despite their visual impairments, they emphasised that the decision to marry was entirely their own, driven by their desire to create a new family together.
Gabriel highlighted the importance of independence of mind and thoughts before making such a decision, emphasising that they are both human beings who deserve to pursue happiness just like anyone else.
“No matter the challenges we may face as differently-abled individuals, we are committed to building our new family together,” Nongrum stated.
“We have made a firm decision to remain together until our last breath, and nothing can deter the love that binds us as a couple,”they added.
