Shillong, Nov 9: A one-day legal seminar on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012, was held at Shillong Law College on 8th November . The programme commenced at 10:30 a.m. with a Welcome Address by Dr Sharif Uddin, Principal, Shillong law college , followed by the felicitation of the Resource Person, Shri F.S. Sangma, District and Sessions Judge, South Garo hills, Meghalaya.
Dr Daiahunlin Mawlong, IQAC Coordinator, then presented the objectives of the seminar, highlighting the importance of understanding the POCSO Act in safeguarding children’s rights and strengthening legal awareness among students.
The first session, from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and the second session, from 12:15 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. ,were conducted by Shri F.S. Sangma. His detailed and insightful discussion on the provisions, procedures, and challenges in the implementation of the POCSO Act helped the students gain a deeper understanding of the legal framework protecting children from sexual offences.
The seminar was highly impactful and enlightening for the students, as it not only enhanced their legal knowledge but also encouraged critical reflection on child protection mechanisms in India. The interactive nature of the sessions allowed students to engage directly with real life case examples and practical issues.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Smt. Claireen Cynthia Fancon, Convener, Academic Committee, Shillong Law college , expressing gratitude to the Resource Person and all participants for making the event a success.
Overall, the seminar proved to be a valuable learning experience that reinforced the importance of legal awareness and responsibility in ensuring justice and protection for children.
