The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has levelled serious allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement against the Vice-Chancellor of the National Law University (NLU), Meghalaya, Dr. Indrajit Dube.
The KSU met with State Law Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, demanding Dube’s immediate removal from his position.
According to the KSU, RTI findings revealed that Dube has misused public funds for personal expenses, including trips outside the state.
The union alleged that Dube used state government funds for his personal travels, with some trips lacking clarity on whether they were official or personal.
The KSU also accused Dube of irregularities in appointments, including the appointment of “Professor in Practice” and “Professor in Residence” without proper procedures.
The union claimed that these professors rarely take classes but draw hefty salaries, with the total expense amounting to Rs. 46,83,500 from September 2023 to date.
Furthermore, the KSU alleged that Dube appointed an assistant professor, Dr. A. Chakraborty, without the required eligibility, and that she is a research scholar of the VC’s wife in IIT Kharagpur. The union also accused Dube of bypassing the reservation policy by appointing his own people on a contractual basis.
The KSU demanded that the state government take immediate action against Dube and ensure transparency and accountability in the administration of the NLU.
The Law Minister has assured the KSU that the government will investigate the allegations and submit the findings to the governing council and executive committee, which includes judges of the Meghalaya High Court.
