Independent MLA for Nongkrem and chairman of the State Planning Board, Lambor Malngiang, has written to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma suggesting the need to form a ‘Meghalaya Regiment’.
The suggestion was made in the backdrop of the recent incident in Iongkhuli, Ri-Bhoi, last week where Assam police intruded into Meghalaya’s jurisdiction.
“Our very own people will be mobilised for absorption in the recruitment process for services to protect the land. This in turn will help in the generation of employment to our youth,” Malngiang said.
He also said that Meghalaya needs to strengthen the police force stationed all along the border with Assam and that border villages need to be provided with proper electricity, road connectivity, water supply and healthcare centres.
“We should also come up with a new policy for free registration of land pattas to the residents of Meghalaya residing along the boundary with Assam,” the MLA said.
Despite health discussions between the Chief Ministers of both states recently, Assam failed to live up to expectations that it would commit itself to bringing peace and harmony, he opined.
