The Meghalaya government is taking concerns about undocumented laborers seriously, particularly amid tensions in neighbouring Bangladesh, Labour Minister Shakliar Warjri said today.
All workers entering the state must register with the Labour Department, as mandated by law. The department has strengthened checks and inspections to address potential influx concerns. Labour inspectors have been instructed to conduct inspections in every block and district, with a timeline to inspect all construction sites. Contractors must register labourers with the Labour Department before starting work.
The minister assured that the department is taking the matter seriously and has stepped up monitoring efforts. He dismissed claims that contractors are complacent in failing to register laborers, stating that registration is mandatory and has been in place for years.
Over the months, pressure groups, particularly in Jaintia Hills, have been conducting raids and checks and have even made labourers without proper documents leave Meghalaya. Many of these labourers without documents were from Bangladesh.
