Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School and St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, both in Shillong, secured the top positions in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations in science and commerce streams, respectively. The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) declared the results today.
Sohan Bhattacharjee of Laban Bengalee Boys’ secured first place in science with 483 marks, while St Mary’s Ferry Filarisha Wann secured first position in commerce with 472.
Second position in the science stream was secured by Gordon Kupar Nongbri with 476 marks from St Edmund’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, and third position was secured by Ar Meker Marpna with 471 marks from St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong.
In the commerce stream, the second place went to Raj Paul with 463 marks from St Anthony’s and third place was shared by Pongkoch Dutta (Laban Bengalee Boys’), Pinky Kumari (St Anthony’s), and Aditya Prasad (Don Bosco College in Tura) with 458 marks.
However, Laban Bengalee Boys’ secured the most impressive results in the MBOSE Class 12 examination.
The school topped the first, fourth and eighth positions in the science stream, and the third and eighth positions in commerce. Moreover, the school achieved 81 distinction marks in science. The school also made history by becoming the first in the board exams to score 100 percent marks in physics.
Speaking to reporters the students attributed their success to hard work, dedication, and their teachers.
The principal of the school, Jona Goswami, stated that people should not judge schools based on their brand name, as lesser-known schools are also performing well. She added that the school started slowly but has now reached this level of excellence.
Meanwhile, there was also joy in Nongpoh as Jagdot Singh Nongtdu, a student from Alpha English Higher Secondary School (AEHSS), clinched 10th position in the commerce stream with 438 marks.
WK Blah, the Principal of AEHSS, praised Nongtdu’s brilliance, highlighting his consistent academic excellence since childhood. “As one of the leading schools in Ri-Bhoi district, we are immensely proud of his achievement, which brings honour not only to our institution but also to our dedicated teachers, supportive parents, and the district at large,” Blah stated.
From Jowai, two places in the Top 10 in science were secured by students of North Liberty Higher Secondary School. Weibha Nongtdu shared sixth place with 466 marks, while Joshaviah Onan Paswet came seventh with 460.
The only other student in the Top 10 not from a Shillong institute was 10th-placed Kevinstrong Lawriniang of Mairang Presbyterian Science College who scored 454.
