Editor,
Kunal Shah’s ascension to WhatsApp boss is not a great feat to go gaga over and it highlights again India’s paradox : producing leaders like Sunder Pichai, Satya Nadela but not tech behemoths like Google and Microsoft. I don’t remember a time when I saw any Indian businessman or entrepreneur in the top 10-billionaire list, meaning no Indian leader has created a substantial impact globally. Talented Indians leave their motherland behind to build dreams in the US and Europe. A tweet I came across recently where the user highlighted Indian tech spending less than $100 billion combined while OpenAI and Anthropic raise a single cheque of $100 billion each without profit. If this continues we may never see tech titans emerging from India.
