Khliehriat, Apr 20: The Khasi Students Union (KSU), South West Border Circle has expressed serious concerns over the alarming colour changes of the Prang River, located in the East Jaintia Hills.
This phenomenon tends to happen during the rainy season, raising suspicions about possible waste dumping in the area, the union said in a statement.
The union said this disturbing shift in the river’s appearance poses significant threats not only to the aquatic life within it but also to the health of local residents. Many community members rely on the Prang River as a primary source of drinking water, making these changes particularly concerning, the KSU pointed out.
Pointing out that continuous pollution may degrade water quality and endanger both wildlife and human health, the union has demanded the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) to conduct an immediate investigation into the pollution of the Prang River, noting that such incidents occur regularly and disrupt the natural ecosystem.
The KSU has urged authorities to implement stringent measures aimed at safeguarding the river from future pollution incidents.
