The Khasi Students Union (KSU) today said local youth cannot be deprived of their livelihood and the government could adopt the Mizoram way of issuing permits to two-wheelers to ferry passengers.
KSU general secretary, Donald V Thabah in a statement today said that the union offers is support to youth engaged as bike-taxi operators in the city, who recently had to stop following the ban declared by the regional transport authority, East Khasi Hills on Rapido and Uber.
Thabah said that while the recent decision was based on the state laws by asking them to register and apply for a licence to operate as per the as per the Meghalaya Taxi Aggregator Operational Rules he also urged the government to find ways for the riders to continue their operations in the city.
He cited the example of Mizoram and said that the state had in 2017 issued permits to two-wheelers to ferry passengers and even created an app called ‘Huiva’, which is administered by the government of Mizoram and operates only in the state.
“We feel that Meghalaya too should follow Mizoram‘s footsteps to enable youth to earn their livelihood and the government to address the problems faced by the riders,” Thabah said.
