The Narpuh circle unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has sharply criticised the Border Security Force (BSF) for its failure to prevent the murder of a farmer in East Jaintia Hills by suspected Bangladeshis just 500m from the force’s camp in the area.
Sylvanus, aka Chiang, Dhar was killed yesterday while protecting his areca nut trees at Lamasaki, around half a kilometre from the nearest BSF camp.
According to residents, Dhar, a resident of Umkiang, was murdered by suspected Bangladeshi nationals while protecting his crop. The farm was a frequent target of cross border looters, villagers claimed.
Dhar, attacked by a group of men armed with sharp weapons, had been accompanied by one Rahul Pohtam, who managed to escape with his life.
The KSU demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and flayed the BSF for allegedly being obsessed with patrolling National Highway 6 instead of protecting Indian farmers.
