The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has written to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills to get an update on the state of repairs on National Highway 6.
The poor condition of the highway led to the staging of protests along the highway during a KSU-enforced shutdown recently.
Even the High Court has taken cognisance of the dilapidated state of the highway and ordered the National Highways Authority of India to initiate repairs immediately.
The highway not only connects the people of Jaintia Hills with the rest of the country but also areas further afield, such as the Barak Valley, Mizoram and Tripura.
The KSU wanted to know of the DC the current status of repair works, the comprehensive plan for the repair and maintenance of NH-6 including timelines for completion and measures taken to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters during repair works.
