The Umsning unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) today prevented non-Khasi labourers trying to enter the state, saying that they did not have valid documents to do so.
The pressure group members apprehended the labourers, who were travelling on two Assam-registered buses (AS 01 GC 7338, AS 01 KC 5638), at Umsning.
On investigation, the KSU learned that 90 labourers did not possess valid documents.
The KSU said it was shocked that the employees at the infiltration check gate are not doing their duty. The group claimed that the labourers said that they just paid Rs 4,000 at the gate and were permitted to enter Meghalaya.
The men were on their way to work in the cement factories in East Jaintia Hills, the KSU said.
The pressure group alleged that the state government has not done enough to tackle the supposed problem of influx, which, it added, has given rise to many other illicit activities.
A warning was also delivered to contractors who bring outside labourers into Meghalaya without the proper documentation according to the Migrant Workmen Act 2011.
The KSU handed over the laborers to Umsning police in order for them to be removed from the state.
