The Khasi Students Union (KSU) staged a protest here today by burning copies of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules. The legislation has been vehemently opposed for its potential implications on Meghalaya and other tribal areas in the North East.
The CAA does not apply to the vast majority of Meghalaya but pressure groups are still adamantly opposed to it.
Prior to the symbolic burning, a gathering was convened at Iewmawlong market where pressure group members brandished placards and banners against the central government’s decision not to exempt the whole of the North East from the purview of the CAA.
Participants instead vehemently advocated for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) instead of the CAA.
