Shillong, Jun 1:  The ICAR Research Complex for the NEH Region in Umiam, in collaboration with ICAR-KVK Ri Bhoi, launched a month-long national flagship programme, ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan, which commenced today.

The programme aims to promote soil conservation and sustainable agricultural practices across the region.  The launch was attended by ICAR Research Complex Director Dr. G. Kadirvel, officials of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency and community leaders.

The objective of the campaign is to enhance soil health and strengthen the livelihoods of farmers while preserving essential soil resources. A training programme focusing on “Green Manuring and Natural Farming for Sustainable Soil Health” was also organised, drawing 120 farmers from the Ri Bhoi district.

The training combined hands-on activities with theoretical knowledge, equipping participants with science-based, low-cost farming practices. Experts introduced essential techniques such as green manuring, which involves growing legumes and cover crops, enhancing soil fertility, and reducing the reliance on chemical fertilizers. Practical modules covered critical crop management strategies that improve nutrient retention and soil structure. Additionally, the natural farming component taught sustainable practices like composting and crop rotation, which help in minimising pest cycles and promoting agricultural resilience.

Meanwhile, the College of Agriculture CAU (I) Kyrdemkulai, participated in a virtual event launching the nationwide campaign.

CAU Vice Chancellor Dr. Anupam Mishra discussed the initiatives undertaken by the Central Agricultural University. These initiatives are focused on reducing the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, aiming to enhance the quality of soil health.
