The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) has resolved to intensify their movement for inclusion of Khasi language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution by holding awareness programmes in all areas under the Khasi-Jaiñtia and Ri Bhoi regions.
Speaking to reporters today after the general council meeting, KAS President, DRL Nonglait informed that they will set up a meeting with the union government once the new government is in place.
He also said that the members of the society have also decided to follow up with the state government with regard to making Khasi one of the official languages in the state, along with English.
During the meeting, KAS members discussed crucial societal issues that the authors can reflect on, such as drug menace, HIV and rampant corruption.
Nonglait also spoke about an important project taken up by KAS to publish a Khasi-English dictionary, which is being supported by the Department of Arts and Culture and the KHADC.
The project is targeted to be completed by next year.
Nonglait informed that the society has constituted a research team of 11 researchers under the guidance of Prof Badaplin War and Dr Barika Khyriem.
