The Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pyniaid Sing Syiem, today warned that police complaints will be lodged against a landowner involved in unauthorised earth cutting in Pillangkata, Ri-bhoi.
The CEM carried out an inspection today at the site in Pillangkata, which was prompted by multiple complaints regarding rampant earth cutting without necessary permissions and authorisations from the state government and KHADC.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Syiem said that he had visited the site in person after the landowner, who he identified as Billu Taro, failed to comply with a KHADC show-cause notice.
Syiem further accused Taro of initiating the earth cutting under the cover of darkness. The KHADC plans to take legal action against the owner if he fails to respond to the show-cause notice within two days.
Meanwhile, on the recent clash at Barapathar village on the Meghalaya-Assam border, Syiem, as a member of the regional committee for Ri-Bhoi, briefed Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong about the matter.
It was also disclosed that during the last meeting of the regional committees in Guwahati, decisions were made to conduct site inspections in areas requiring boundary settlement. The hope is to prevent further clashes.
