Jal Diwali – ‘Women for Water, Water for Women Campaign” – under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, began in Meghalaya today with the celebration at Urkhla Water Treatment Plant, Jowai.
This initiative, from November 7 to 9, will see women self-help group (SHG) members taken to water treatment plants for exposure to the various processes involved in supplying clean and safe drinking water to households. The main objective of the visit is to foster a sense of belonging and ownership among women towards the water infrastructure.
After the tour was completed, a small meeting was convened to record the testimonials and feedback from the participants. The officials explained the various processes involved in water treatment. While interacting with the SHG members, the officials emphasised on the importance of water and the need to conserve it.
Jal Diwali programme has been organized in three locations in Meghalaya. Similar exposure visits have been planned for tomorrow and Wednesday at Mawphlang and Nongstoin respectively.
