Regarding the recent assault case at Mahadev Khola in the city and a subsequent tweet by an organisation accusing the Khasi Students Union (KSU) of being behind it, cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh called the tweeter very irresponsible.
The incident on July 24 saw a group of men thrash a shopkeeper, her son and devotees at the temple but was not communal in nature, police have maintained.
Then, a social media handle by the name Legal Rights Observatory accused the KSU of being behind the attack.
“They probably intend to communalise the issue and malign the image of Meghalaya to the people from outside the state,” Lyngdoh, a former KSU leader before he joined politics, said.
Meanwhile, on the law and order situation, Lyngdoh said that with the spread of narcotics and drugs the situation was bound to worsen.
Stating that it is a challenge because Shillong city has grown in numbers and the use of drugs has also gone up, he still expressed hope that the recent recruitment of 2,000 police personnel and cooperation from local dorbars will help contain the menace.
“We are proactively on the job of containing this menace,” Lyngdoh added.
