The State government has filed no report before the Meghalaya High Court with regards to stopping indiscriminate felling of trees throughout the State.
The court in its April 9 directed the state to file a report on the action taken to stop illegal felling of trees.
“It appears that no action has been taken till now since no report is filed by the State,” a division bench of the High Court consisting of Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh said while hearing a PIL filed by Geraldine G. Shabong, which initially sought orders to stop illegal or irregular felling of trees in and around the Lower New Colony area, Laitumkhrah.
Additional Advocate General, N.D Chullai sought time for the state to file the report.
The court said, “At least initiation of action and some positive move in that direction must be shown in the report. A copy of the report shall be circulated to the Advocate-on-Record for the petitioner by June 23, 2025.”
