A tourist couple from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore has gone missing in Sohra since Sunday.
According to reports, the couple Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, and his wife Sonam were last seen in Sohra, a popular tourist destination also known as Cherrapunji, on Sunday.
Police said the couple had rented a two-wheeler from Keating Road in Shillong to explore Sohra.
Their disappearance was reported after their phones remained switched off overnight, prompting concerns about their safety.
The couple’s relative Govind, filed a report stating that Raja and Sonam had gone missing.
East Khasi Hills, Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem informed that police have registered a missing case and all efforts were on to find them.
The two wheeler—a scooty, used by the tourist couple, was recovered by locals who later informed the police.
According to Syiem, after hiring the two-wheeler they went to Mawlakhiat.
The couple were last seen on May 22 checking into a guest house, Shipara Homestay in Nongriat.
The Superintendent of Police said that the next day at around 5:30 in the morning they left and came back to Mawlakhiat.
According to him, the locals found the abandoned scooty but her locals from Sohrarim on May 23 near Golden Pines Dhaba.
“All stakeholders including villagers have been alerted to look out for them,” Syiem said.
He said that now police are trying to trace places where the couple visited and the last place was in Sohrarim.
The Superintendent of Police said that searches are being conducted in different villages in the area.
He said that the couple had taken a guide from Mawlakhiat to Nongriat but when they returned to the former place they were on their own.
Recently, authorities are urging tourists to take the help of local guides, especially when exploring remote areas or during the monsoon season, to ensure their safety.
This is because the area’s rugged terrain, steep slopes, and unpredictable weather can pose significant risks to inexperienced travelers.
Earlier this year, the decomposed body of a Hungarian tourist, Zolt Puskas, was discovered from Rymgku Ksang under Elaka Ramdait near Shella. He was missing for around two weeks.
He went missing on March 29 and his body was recovered on April 10.
