The residents of Nengkra Agalgre village of East Garo Hills have demanded construction of bridge over Rongtam to provide safe connectivity to the people, who are forced to cross the river at the risk of their life.
The local villagers have been facing problems crossing the river especially during the rainy season when the water level rises. Although the villagers have been demanding construction of bridges and submitted a memorandum to the local MLA, nothing has been done to remove the woes of the people so far.
“No answer, no inspection, no respite. Our patience has worn thin, our resolve strengthened by the indignation that burns within us,” locals said.
“Students, already beset by the pressures of half-yearly exams, are now forced to confront the ire of the river, which has become an insurmountable obstacle to their education. Parents, desperate to ensure their children’s academic progress, are reduced to carrying them on their shoulders, wading through the treacherous waters. This is not merely an inconvenience, but a stark reminder of the government’s callous disregard for our welfare,” the villagers said in a statement.
“Build us a bridge, a lifeline that will reconnect us to the mainland, to education, to livelihoods, to life itself,” they demanded.
