Shillong, Dec 19: Two pressure groups have complained to police of Jadi Outpost in South Garo Hills regarding movement of what they suspect are overloaded trucks carrying illegal coal.
In a joint letter, local units of the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) wrote that 50 to 60 heavy trucks transporting coal rumble along the Jadi to Gasuapara stretch, including the Dangsa-Awe Karongre stretch, of National Highway 217 every night.
The trucks are so heavily laden that the pressure groups suspect that they are above the legal limit as damage has been caused to even newly-repaired parts of the road. They also suspect that the trucks operate in the dead of night to avoid the attention of the authorities.
So many trucks on the road at night poses a danger for other vehicles and kicks up plenty of dust and creates excessive noise for people living along the route.
The FKJGP and GSMC called on the police to crack down on any illegalities in the transportation of the coal.
