After reports that Assam has become a hotbed for jihadi activities, the Meghalaya police have stepped up security operations ahead of Independence Day.
Two weeks ago, Assam police found links between 11 people and Bangladesh-based terror outfit Ansarul Bangla Team. The 11 have all been arrested. One is reported to have been running a madrassa.
Meghalaya shares a 400-plus kilometre border with Bangladesh and the state does have a problem with illegal immigration from its southern neighbour.
“The Meghalaya police are taking extra steps so that anti-social elements or jihadi groups have no place in the state,” Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said today.
Stating that the department is working overtime, the minister said that even citizens are being vigilant and are a help to the police when they witness suspicious activity.
The Meghalaya authorities are also working with central agencies and other states because terrorist activities are a national threat.
“We are coordinating with different states so that no element that puts the unity and integrity of the country at risk has any place in India and in the state,” Rymbui said.
