The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC), Umiam circle today pushed back 25 migrant workers who were travelling in two vehicles coming from Assam.
According to the HYC, the migrant workers were on their way to work for the Topcem cement company in East Jaintia Hills and other parts of Shillong.
Circle President, Shinestar Kharpan said all of them came with no work permit or any valid documents. He said they were surprised how they were allowed entry from the infiltration checkgate at Byrnihat and said the police manning the entry gate should perform their duty.
Meanwhile, the Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) closed down many business establishments operated by non-tribals in Bhoirymbong located along the Shillong bypass, stating they did not have valid documents.
HITO president, Alvis Kyrsian said most of the shops did no obtain trading license, labour license and other documents from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
Kyrsian told reporters that the surprise check was conducted by them as the KHADC especially its enforcement department, failed to keep a check on establishments operated by non-tribals in various areas the district even as many complaints were lodged by them.
