Shillong, Jul 6: A husband-wife duo were arrested after being found in possession of 116 vials of heroin in East Khasi Hills, police informed today.
According to the Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills, personnel of the Anti-Infiltration Directorate and the Anti-Narcotics Task Force checked 35 individuals during the operation. Several others fled on seeing police, the SP stated.
Of those checked, all 35 produced documents from other states to establish identity and residence. Police said these documents are being sent for verification to the concerned states.
During checking, ANTF personnel apprehended a husband and wife, identified as Rahim Ali (43) and Jaibanu (35). Police said 116 vials of suspected heroin weighing 14.42g were recovered from their possession and seized in the presence of an independent witness.
A case has been registered at Sadar Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and an investigation is underway.
The drive was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal infiltration and drug trafficking in the district, the SP said.
