The Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), a pre-poll alliance between the United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) will start campaigning for the UDP’s candidate in the upcoming Mawphlang by-election.
In Mawphlang, the UDP has set up noted footballer and son of deceased MLA SK Sunn, Eugeneson Lyngdoh.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting tonight, HSPDP MLA for Mawkyrwat and cabinet minister, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, said that the alliance has been united in previous by-elections, like in Ranikor and Shella.
Tongkhar also defended the record of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government (of which he is a member), saying it had taken steps to solve the long pending boundary row with Assam.
“The MDA government is not shying away from its responsibility to solve the decades long border issue,” the HSPDP MLA said.
On the issue of unification of regional parties, general secretary of the UDP, Jemino Mawthoh, said that in earlier years too there has been effort to bring all under one roof.
“This exercise to unite and bring together the regional parties is an ongoing process.
