The Hynñiewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) has given Hima Mylliem three days to scrap the appointment of headmen belonging to the Garo community in Raid Marwet.
Last year, Hima Mylliem had written to the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner that no-objection certificates (NOCs) and other documents issued by Garo community headmen for various purposes have no legal standing.
However, last week, the HNYF found that Garo headmen have continued to issue NOCs to non-Khasis to dig borewells, “which is unacceptable,” HNYF leader Louis Dohtdong said today.
He said that this is not a matter of discrimination but that land belonging to a particular community cannot be claimed by another.
“We want Hima Mylliem to direct the surrender of the seals and letterheads of the Garo headmen in Raid Marwet within three days,” he added.
