TheMylliem unit of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) submitted a memorandum today to the Superintendent of Police in charge of traffic, Shailendra Bamaniya, alleging untimely movement of overloaded trucks through the Upper Shillong- Umshyrpi road.
Speaking to the press afterwards, HITO unit president Bornfield Marbaniang said the meeting was not fruitful as the SP could not give any assurance as the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Transport Department. Marbaniang said that there are many overloaded trucks that ply through Upper Shillong to Umshyrpi towards Guwahati despite restrictions on overloaded trucks.
Such trucks cause huge traffic jams during school hours, which, in turn, creates a great disturbance to students and the public at large, Marbaniang added.
Sharp turns on the road have also led to several accidents. Marbaniang said that in the last few weeks, he had witnessed trucks break down twice or thrice due to the failure of the authorities to curb these discrepancies.
HITO will also seek an appointment with the Transport Department pertaining to this matter.
