The Seng Phira Hima Mawlong has expressed deep concern and rejected the allegations of persecution against the Hindu community of Ichamati made by three people – Prantush Sarkar, Mridul Das and Binayak Roy – who met with Governor Satya Pal Malik on the matter last month.
The group’s Chairman, W Khyllep, said that the Seng investigated the mater thoroughly and found that all the allegations made by the trio are “baseless and untrue”.
Khyllep added that tribals and non-tribals had been living in peace for “many years under Hima Mawlong as a whole” and that these claims had portrayed the Ichamati region in a bad light unfairly.
“We strongly warn the non-Khasi not to try and instigate and spread false rumours in the future and defame Ichamati.”
He also urged the Sirdar of Hima Mawlong, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and state government to take action against Sarkar, Das and Roy for “spreading false rumours and incorrect information to try and create communal tension in the state.”
