If the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is willing to project him as such, AL Hek would have no issue with being the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate.
“I’m a disciplined soldier of the BJP and I cannot say no if the BJP decides to field me or anyone else as the Chief Ministerial candidate and we have to accept (what the party decides),” the Pynthorumkhrah MLA said today.
Hek is one of only two BJP legislators in the 60-member Assembly, the other being cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai of South Shillong.
At the upcoming elections, which are due by March 2023, Hek will be facing a challenge from close to home in the form of his nephew Rocky Hek, who recently dramatically quit the BJP in favour of the National People’s Party. Also expected to be in the fray is former MLA Pynshngainlang N Syiem of the Congress Party.
On the polls, Hek maintained he will never and has never taken the electorate or his opponents for granted.
“I have been working very hard in every election that I contested and nothing can be taken for granted. I never underestimate any candidates who are contesting the elections and I am not a legislator who appears just before election times,” he said.
Hek also said that the BJP is working hard to see that it can field winnable candidates in all 60 seats.
“We already have more than 30 poetential candidates and we will cross double digits (in terms of seats won) this time,” he added.
