BJP MLA Alexander L Hek has flagged ‘exorbitant estimate’ for the construction of a commercial complex in a plot that earlier houses the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) office in Jail Road.
According to Hek, construction of the complex was earlier estimated at Rs 240 crore in the one acre plot but later lowered down to Rs 215 crore.
Pointing out that as the complex is constructed as per the MUDA building bye laws, requiring it to leave spaces from all sides, Hek said the plot will be reduced from the one acre thereby reducing even the estimate.
“Can you imagine where can they spend the Rs. 240 crores? I was then told that Rs. 215 crore was finalised for its construction… Still this is on the higher side,” he said.
Not sure if there are irregularities in the project, Hek said spending more than Rs. 200 crore for the project in a small plot is high. He said the government should have concentrated on alleviating the sufferings of people caused by traffic jams.
He said that traffic congestion is causing mental illness and the government should address to it.
