Shillong, Aug 5: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to present facts on allegations that eligible vendors were not issued Certificate of Vending (CoV).
A division bench of Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh while hearing a Public Interest Litigation on the relocation of vendors from Khyndailad said the board will submit its response in the form of an affidavit by August 11.
The Shillong Roadside Hawkers’ Association had on July 25 and August 1 written to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the SMB stating that some eligible vendors had not been issued CoV.
The court-appointed Special Officer, Subhasis Chakrawarty had also written to the CEO on the matter.
The High Court also examined the report of the Special Officer on the exercise of eviction of vendors without license and relocation of license vendors from the Khyndailad area to the MUDA parking lot.
“It appears from this report and the submission made before us that the exercise has been peaceful and successful,” the court noted.
The next hearing is scheduled on August 13, 2025.
