After the death of an infant in an ambulance that was stuck in traffic caused by a chaotic fishing competition in West Khasi Hills over the weekend, the Governor has revoked the notification that was issued in July relating to the administration and control of such competitions.
In an order dated today and signed by the Secretary of the District Council Affairs Department, FM Dopth, the Governor noted that the KHADC notification dated July 14, 2023 was published in the Meghalaya Gazette on August 3 without following due procedure.
As a result, the Governor has revoked the notification. What due procedure was not followed was not spelled out by Dopth.
It may be mentioned that the district council through its notification (KHADC No DC/RBF/XXXII/64/2023/171 dated July 14, 2023) made mandatory for organisers of fishing competition to take permission from it.
The notification issued by the Fishery Department of KHADC under the United Khasi Jaintia District Fisheries Act, 1954 and also under Rule 29 of the Assam and Meghalaya Rules, 1951 also fixed different rates as fees for granting of permission for organising of fishing competitions.
