The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) today wrote to the new executive committee of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on the day of the swearing-in of the new MDCs, asking for the house to work on ways to ensure a separate electoral roll for the GHADC in the future.
The pressure group asked for laws to be enacted to bar non-tribals from voting and contesting elections to the council.
“Laws should be made under the Sixth Schedule to ensure this is done,” said assistant general secretary, Salman Sangma.
Further on the question of nomination to the GHADC, the GSU was of the firm belief that an A’king Nokma needed to be nominated to the council in the years to come. Apart from the 29 directly-elected MDCs, one is nominated by the state government.
