The Garo Students Union (GSU) has reiterated its demand for the upgrade of Dadenggre civil sub-division to a full-fledged district.
In a release by GSU western zone leader Tengsan M Marak, the pressure group said that despite being the oldest civil sub-division in Meghalaya, the people’s hopes of having a district of their own have not been fulfilled, while others have jumped the queue, such as Eastern West Khasi Hills, the erstwhile Mairang civil sub-division.
“On what basis have they (the government) upgraded Mairang civil sub-division into a full-fledged district?” the GSU asked.
Several pleas for upgrading Dadenggre have been made since 1999 by the GSU; Dadenggre was made a civil sub-division in 1982.
The pressure group leader called on the MLAs of constituencies falling under Dadenggre, namely Phulbari, Rajabala, Selsell, Tikrikilla, Raksamgre and Dadenggre, to come together to push for a separate district more forcefully.
