Rimjen Ch Sangma, chairman of the Save B Mahal Committee and of the Garo State Movement Committee’s Pedaldoba unit, resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today.
The move comes a day after the BJP made its list of candidates for the upcoming February 27 Assembly election known.
It was only last month that Sangma announced that he would see a BJP ticket for the Raksamgre seat. However, the saffron party instead went with the sitting MLA, Benedic R Marak, who recently quit the National People’s Party (NPP) in favour of the BJP.
Sangma had been fiercely critical of the GHADC’s handling of the B Mahal lands when the council was headed by Marak (who is also the MDC of Raksamgre).
Having to support Marak in the election must have been too much for Rimjen to bear, though he did not mention this in the resignation letter.
“Thank you for all the support and opportunities you have provided me over the years. I have truly enjoyed my time working at the BJP and am grateful for the encouragement you have given me to pursue my personal and professional development,” he wrote to BJP president JP Nadda. “I will do everything I can to complete my current projects and train other team members or new employees to take over my duties. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help during this transition period. I wish the BJP continued success in the future and hope to stay in touch.”
