In what is considered as a welcomed move, the State government is planning to shift registered hawkers from Police Bazar stretch in order to make the entire stretch a pedestrian zone.
Speaking to media persons here today, Tourism Minister, Paul Lyngdoh said that only registered hawkers and those who complied with the law will be suitably rehabilitated.
According to him, the registered hawkers will be shifted to government markets like MUDA market complex, Polo market complex and the Ïewduh parking lot.
“The law of the land will prevail as no one is above law. Hawkers will have to conform to the laws as the streets do not belong to any single group of people,” Lyngdoh said.
Stating that pedestrians have their rights to walk without any obstruction, Lyngdoh reiterated that the Khyndailad stretch will be declared as a pedestrian zone in order to encourage people to walk around freely.
He also informed that the government plans to implement the idea within June.
It may be mentioned that many people have complained over the increasing number of hawkers who have overrun footpaths in the city especially in busy areas like Police Bazar, GS Road, Motphran, Laitumkhrah, Civil Hospital etc.
