With more than 12 hours still left on its mobile internet ban, the Meghalaya government decided to further extend the suspension for another 48 hours.
The mobile internet suspension has been imposed in seven districts, all in the eastern range of the state – West Jaintia Hills, East Jaiñtia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri – Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills.
The mobile internet suspension began on November 22 afternoon (though its official start was set at 10:30am) in the wake of the Mukroh incident. Yesterday, it was extended for another 48 hours.
Tonight, a further extension was signed by Shakil P Ahammed, Principal Secretary in the Home Department. The extension will take effect from Saturday morning and run until Monday morning.
The ban has been widely condemned by opposition political parties, pressure groups and civil society as a sledgehammer that punishes everyone.
