A new political party based in Garo Hills will be launched soon, though the date and name of the outfit has yet to be shared.
News about the regional outfit was shared with the media by social activist Kingstone Marak today.
In a press release he said that several rounds of discussion with likeminded people of Garo Hills have been held and that the political party will be led by a “former NGO leader/social activist”.
“The regional party will take up issues related to the political, social and economic uplift of the indigenous tribals of the state and to fight for the rights of the Garos in accordance with the Constitution of India as the Garos have been deprived of development at par with other cities and the main focus is on corruption in Garo Hills, which has hampered development activities,” the release said.
Marak has come to prominence in recent times due to the allegations made by him and others regarding corruption in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
The party will look forward to contesting the upcoming GHADC elections, which have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will not have a pre-poll alliance with any other party as “the main agenda for the election will be corruption, the need to strengthen the GHADC and revamp it for the betterment of Garo society,” he added.
