Two garbage trucks funded under the District Mineral Foundation fund for the financial year 2024-2025 were handed over to Khliehriat West and Lad Rymbai villages in East Jaintia Hills district to support waste management and sanitation efforts.
A function was held at the Khliehriat West community Hall and Lad Rymbai Datsympein Community Hall respectively.
Cabinet Minister and local MLA Kyrmen Shylla in his speech, sought the co-operation of all stakeholders particularly community leaders in regards to the issue of waste management even as he impressed on the village authorities to make optimum use of the garbage trucks, which serves to alleviate the issue of waste management.
He also highlighted developmental initiatives undertaken by the government in the district. Shylla informed that the government has approved the project for constructing the road connecting San Shnong areas of East Jaintia Hills to Shkentalang in West Jaintia Hills to promote trade and commerce and tourism for an amount of Rs. 125 crore.
Deputy Commissioner & Chairman, DMF Trust Shivansh Awasthi expressed hope that with the handing over of the new garbage trucks, the issue of garbage disposal in Khliehriat particularly in the market places will be improved to a large extent while also taking the occasion to highlight the importance of waste segregation into wet and dry wastes at source.
Awasthi also said the office is exploring the idea of developing some small composting units through DMF or through MNREGA where wet waste can be used to convert into manure and plastic waste, whenever collected in big bulk, can be sent to cement factories for disposal in their incinerators.
