Weed, also referred to as ganja, marijuana or cannabis, has started to become a way of life for many young people in Shillong. The fact that youngsters, especially school students are using ganja everyday is indeed a matter of concern.
Weed addiction is leading to serious social, physical and psychological consequences in youngsters. When people begin using ganja as teenagers, the drug impairs thinking, memory, and learning functions.
The easy availability of ganja in Shillong is one of the main reasons for the growing number of youngsters using it. It is a fact that ganja is an easily available drug in this city. Another reason is that ganja is way cheaper than drugs and alcohol and it can be bought for as low as Rs 50 or Rs 100. The affordability of weed in Motphran, Iewduh, Polo and other areas has made it one of the biggest addiction problems for our youngsters.
It is high time that the authorities, especially the Meghalaya Police launch a crackdown against sellers and suppliers of ganja in Shillong and other parts of the State. The culprits should be arrested and put behind bars under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
The authorities must deal firmly against ganja sale and use in order to save our young children from this addiction that can ruin their life and future.
